Amazon CARES operates the only no-kill dog shelter in Peru’s Amazon River Basin. Our shelter often houses up to forty dogs at a time, providing dogs with veterinary care, food, shelter, and much needed love and attention until they are placed in a permanent home.

 

Throughout the years, our shelter has had to undergo modifications and remodels in order to accommodate growth as well as adapt to the area’s climate. In 2012 our shelter had to be completely rebuilt on higher ground due to flooding of the nearby Itaya River. Luckily, no dogs have ever been harmed as a result of the area’s climate while staying at our shelter. Although our jungle shelter is built for exclusively for dogs, we have accommodations for cats at our veterinary clinic in Iquitos.
