Our Story
Amazon CARES was founded in 2004 by Tennessee native Molly Mednikow. Molly had traveled to the region of Loreto, Peru, many times with another organization and was always struck by the large number of street dogs and their poor quality of life. She began rescuing individual dogs but quickly decided she could do more.
In 2004, Molly sold her share of a family jewelry business and moved to Peru in order to start Amazon CARES. At first Amazon CARES was met with some resistance, as responsible pet ownership and animal adoption were novel concepts for the region. Throughout the years Amazon CARES has helped to shape the local culture, encouraging compassion towards animals.
As Amazon CARES has grown, the organization has been able to offer a variety of programs promoting animal health and welfare, public health, and environmental protection. Amazon CARES has a modern veterinary clinic in Iquitos, offering affordable veterinary care to members of the community. In addition, Amazon CARES has the region’s only no-kill animal shelter.
